Position Deck Lights

Position deck lights

Once you have decided that your deck needs lights so you can really use it to its full potential then the fun really starts. What type of lights do you buy , where do you position deck lights for optimum performance and how do you install them?

This is the point where most people give up and just get used to sitting in the dark. While installing deck lights isn’t hard it works best when you do some planning before hand. Just as you give thought to where you position landscape lighting, you should do the same with your placement deck lights.

The first thing you should do is ask some questions, the answers to these will greatly affect how you position deck lights and what type of deck lighting you install/

-How Big is the space I want to illuminate
-Do we have electricity nearby
-Do I want to feature any one area
-Do I have steps
-What is my budget

If you have a large deck and want to light it all up then you need a bigger budget than if you only want to light up a small area. If your garden has a nice feature, something like a water feature or even a palm tree that you want to show off then you may want to get separate landscape spot lights to show that off.

If you have deck steps then you need to make sure they have light, when you are looking how to position step lights you should make sure they are out of the way of the area where people walk but still provide light so people can see where they are walking. Low voltage led lighting is perfect for steps, if you are good with carpentry then you could go with recessed lights, small round led lighting that won’t generate too much heat.

What budget do you have to work with, money is a factor in nearly every purchase of garden decking lights. If you are lucky enough to have an unlimited budget then how you position deck lights really won’t matter to much as you can pay someone else for it all.

If you are working to a budget and are not a qualified electrician then you may want to look at solar deck lighting, using solar lights for the deck saves you from having to get an electrician in to position deck lights for you.

Position Deck Lights

Solar deck lights can be positioned just about anywhere , obviously they work better if you put them where there is some sun but as you try and imagine where to position deck lights think about how easy it would be to place solar powered lights there. No need to run cables, save money on both the initial install and the ongoing cost of electricity.

The only downside of solar powered deck lighting is that it is normally not as bright as a low voltage deck light, so you will need to get more deck lights positioned round the space you have. This is a small problem when you think of the advantages.

Trying to decide how to position deck lights should take you a couple of hours at least so you can get them right.
