Outdoor wall lights
Anyone who has ever come home at night to a dark driveway and then tried to fumble around and find their keys so they can get in the house will agree that having outdoor wall lights is vital.
Technology, design and production values have improved dramatically over the last 10 years so the choice of outdoor wall lights is increasing on an almost daily basis. You are no longer stuck with a black metal cover with a light bulb sticking out the bottom of it.
One of the greatest developments in lighting has been with outdoor led lighting, these lights save you money as they use so little power to run them. LED lights produce negligible heat and you can buy special outdoor light fixtures which don’t attract bugs. The fact that you won’t have bugs all round the light fixture every evening is a good enough reason to use LED lights.
Outdoor wall lights are a little bit different from outdoor deck lights, with deck lighting the best choice is often the solar powered models. This works well as you can have many of them in close proximity to each other. This option isn’t available to you for your wall lights, well unless you wish to stick half a doze lights against the side of your house?
Wall lights really need to be mains powered, this means that you should get a qualified electrician to install a new mains feed, if you don’t already have one, so that you can be assured that it will be totally safe. While it may be tempting to try and run the wiring yourself it really is not worth the risk of personal injury or fire for the sake of a couple of outdoor wall lights.
Before you go and call in electricians you need to give some thought to the type of outside light you want to use. The lights you use on your wall are not the same as the outdoor landscape lighting that you just plonk under your bushes or trees. You will see these outdoor wall lights on a daily basis and so will anyone who comes to visit you.
Size- You need the light to be big enough to give out enough light for you to be able to see by it, but you don’t want it to look like someone took a spotlight from the local sports field and plonked it on the side of your house.
Style- If your house is a old cottage with a thatched roof you don’t want to use a hyper modern light, it will stand out like a sore thumb and take it from someone who has installed a few outdoor wall lights and hit their thumb doing it you dont want one of those!
Sturdy – If your house gets beaten by rain, snow, heavy winds and a good deal of all of them at the same time then you need to make sure that the outdoor wall lights you choose are robust. Especially where they are connected to your house.
Don’t scrimp on outdoor wall lights just because they are a very small but important part of the impression people get of your home when they drive by or come to visit.
